ESSAY 26
THE
"CHARACTER DOESN'T MATTER"
MYTH
The character of politicians DOES matter. And there are
at least ten reasons:
1. ALL OF US ARE ROLE MODELS. We cannot choose whether or
not to be a role model. We can only choose to be a good role
model or a bad role model. For most of us, only a few chil-
dren and youth look to us as pattern for their lives.
However, the leadership of the nation have many that look
to them as an example. Elected officials that steal, lie,
commit adultery, commit sodomy and statutory rape do not de-
serve the place of trust that the American people have placed
in them. Evil leaders must change, or be put out of office.
Otherwise, they will lead our most precious treasures--our
children--into becoming evil also. Eventually, the whole
nation could become corrupt.
2. WHEN A PERSON CHOOSES TO PERFORM A WRONG ACT, HIS MIND
AUTOMATICALLY BEGINS TO RATIONALIZE IN AN ATTEMPT TO JUSTIFY
THAT WRONG ACT. In effect, he becomes blind in the area that
he has compromised. Legislators who have character defects
are crippled in those compromised moral areas. They will make
unjust laws in those areas or other areas. Judges who have
character defects will tend to be either too harsh or too
lenient in those areas when making judicial decisions and
passing sentences. Executives with character defects will
make foolish, superficial value judgments and tend not to
solve root problems.
3. PEOPLE WILL SUFFER ECONOMICALLY. The work ethic will de-
cline due to the desire for "something for nothing." The
popularity of lotteries in 35 states is a present evidence of
this. There are an estimated 10,000,000 compulsive gamblers
in the United States today. Because of government encourage-
ment, the number of compulsive gamblers will increase as will
the social problems associated with gambling.
Economic parasites in government bureaucracies, people
on welfare and prison inmates will become too great an
economic burden on those who still live productive lives.
The buying of votes by programs such as welfare and universal
health care will push taxes higher. Inflation and taxes will
eventually help destroy the national economy.
4. VIOLENCE WILL INCREASE. The rejection of the Ten Command-
ments and other moral laws will spawn a new generation who
will not respect the lives and property of others. Abortion
as a convenience has been made legal and will beget other
forms of murder and abuse of human beings.
5. PHYSICAL ILLNESS WILL INCREASE. The rejection of con-
science will cause people to be morally weak. Promiscuity and
perverted sex will cause sexually-transmitted diseases to
rise alarmingly. The use of drugs will cause the spread of
disease, crime, and human suffering. The lack of self disci-
pline will weaken our resolve for personal hygiene, proper
diet, etc. Socialized medicine will degrade the quality of
medical treatment, as evidenced in other countries.
6. "MENTAL" ILLNESS WILL INCREASE. Irresponsibility causes
depression, delusions, sociopathic personality, etc. (Read S.
I. McMillen, MD., NONE OF THESE DISEASES, and John W.
Drakeford, EdD., INTEGRITY THERAPY).
Abortion wounds the woman who has the abortion and we do
not yet know the long-term effects on the rest of the family
involved. What will happen in the minds of children who learn
that their parents killed their brothers and sisters? Crack
babies and AIDS babies will be among the innocents who will
suffer psychologically as well as physically.
7. THE UNITED STATES WILL BECOME A THIRD WORLD POWER. We will
lose our place of world leadership. The character issue will
undermine our military. Our armed forces must have discipline
and the lack of moral character and self-discipline in its
leadership will weaken it internally. Likewise, our manufac-
turing and gross national product will suffer due to laziness
and hedonism. Our lack of basic education in the government
schools will cripple our technological lead.
8. RELIGION WILL DEGENERATE AND FAIL IN ITS FUNCTION OF ACT-
AS A NATIONAL CONSCIENCE FOR SOCIETY. Cults and Satanic
groups will increase in number and influence.
9. IF THE PERSONS WHO CAMPAIGN FOR OFFICE ARE CHARACTER
DEFICIENT, WHAT THEY PROMISE IS NOT BELIEVEABLE. Therefore,
the image that they project is just that--an image. We could
unknowingly elect sociopathic people like Hitler or Stalin.
10. PEOPLE WHO LACK CHARACTER PROBABLY HAVE REJECTED GOD AND
THEREFORE HAVE CUT THEMSELVES OFF FROM GOD'S WISDOM AND HIS
HELP TO GOVERN. By rejecting God and becoming their own god,
they also open themselves up for further delusion and manipu-
lation by demons.
Let us pray for politicians who are in office. Let us
carefully study candidates. Let us prayerfully choose the
best candidate and vote for him.
